Afognak Joint Venture
In 1980, Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) which allowed Koniag and several village corporations in the region to trade some of their deficiency entitlements on the Alaska Peninsula for nearly 280,000 acres of timber land on Afognak Island. In 1982, Koniag and its village corporation partners formed Afognak Joint Venture (AJV). AJV received title to the land in 1988 and began timber operations in 1989. All but two of the native corporations have partitioned out of the AJV, Koniag and Afognak. Koniag and Afognak are working together to finish the partition process.

Koniag is working to finalize their land entitlements in accordance with the Bureau of Land Management’s Land Acceleration Act, which states that all land entitlements should be complete by 2009.
In addition to subsurface selections for Koniag, we are also working to finalize native allotments and 14(h)(1) (historical and cemetery) sites.
