There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to provide for Shareholder families during a time of loss.
The Koniag Burial Assistance Program is designed to help Shareholder’s families during a time of loss by defraying a portion of funeral expenses and other costs associated with the death of a voting Koniag Shareholder. Families of a deceased voting Shareholder can receive up to $1,000 in assistance for funeral costs. Koniag will disburse benefits within one week of receipt of a complete application. To access the Burial Assistance Program, the surviving spouse or relative in charge of making the funeral arrangements of the voting Koniag Shareholder should complete the simple one-page application form. To be eligible for this benefit, the deceased Shareholder must be a voting Koniag Shareholder, have a valid will on file with Koniag, and passed away on or after April 1, 2017.
Staff and Notaries are available at Shareholder meetings to help Shareholders complete their wills.

My relative passed in the last six months. Can my family still apply for funding? To be eligible for this benefit, the deceased Shareholder must have passed away on or after April 1, 2017. Applications for burial assistance may be submitted up to 6 months of the eligible voting Koniag Shareholder’s date of death. Funding is not available to assist with passing’s that took place prior to April 1, 2017 or for passings that occurred more than 6 months from the voting Shareholders date of death.
My relative passed away earlier in the year but will not be buried until April. Can my family still apply for funding? To be eligible for this benefit, Shareholders must have passed away on or after April 1, 2017.
I am not a relative of the deceased Shareholder but I am responsible for making the funeral arrangements. Can I apply for funding? Yes, the individual in charge of making the funeral arrangements can apply for funding. Koniag will verify with an immediate family member that individuals are authorized to apply for funding on behalf of the family.
What can the burial assistance funds be used for? Burial Assistance funds can be used for: 1) transportation costs associated with the deceased final resting place; 2) supplies for preparation of final resting (e.g. head stone, casket, wood for casket, cross, labor associated with the construction of a cross or casket, labor or preparation of the final resting place, and clothing for final resting); 3) food and facility costs for the wake or memorial service; and 4) Transportation costs for family members to travel to the community of the final resting place.
Can I submit a copy of my relative’s death certificate? Yes, copies of death certificates are accepted.
The funeral costs more than $1,000. Can Koniag pay the funeral home directly? Yes, Koniag can pay the funeral home directly. On the application form, list the name and contact information for the funeral home.
Will Koniag’s Burial Assistance Program impact my ability to receive burial assistance from other organizations? It is possible that Koniag’s Burial Assistance funds could impact your ability to qualify for other burial assistance programs. Shareholders are strongly encouraged to reach out to other burial assistance programs to determine what, if any, impact Koniag’s funds may have on your ability to secure other burial assistance funding.
