Cama’i! Thank you for your interest in visiting Koniag, Inc. and Koniag Benefits Trust Lands (“Koniag Lands”). Our permitting program is designed to allow people to enjoy our ancestral lands while protecting their pristine habitat and unparalleled wilderness character.
Unguided users must obtain a Land Access Permit (available online or at Koniag’s Kodiak office) and carry the permit and a valid photo ID at all times while on Koniag Lands. Unguided Permits are valid for one calendar year. Areas open to unguided use include: lands on Afognak Island, Womens Bay, parts of Karluk Lake and River, and the Sturgeon River Basin at certain times of the year.
Camping is not allowed in sensitive habitat areas within one mile of the Karluk River. Overnight camping is only allowed in the areas along the Karluk River shown on the Land Use Map. Users may stay up to one week in each designated area, and groups are limited to six (6) people.
Guided users must also obtain a Land Access Permit. Guided permits are valid for one guided trip to Koniag Lands. Your guide must have a current Koniag Commercial Use Permit.
If you are travelling to or from Koniag Lands by commercial aircraft or boat, you must use a licensed Commercial Operator. For a list of approved operators, please contact us at: lands@koniag.com or call toll free: (800) 658-3818.
The cost of each Land Access Permits includes endorsements for: fishing, berry picking, small game/waterfowl hunting, and non-commercial filming or still photography. Additional endorsements—such as bear, deer, caribou, or goat hunting, and commercial filing—are available for an extra fee.
Please note that these permits are required by Koniag, but they are not hunting or fishing licenses. Those must be obtained from authorized vendors or the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

If you have questions, contact Koniag’s Land and Natural Resources Department: lands@koniag.com or (800) 658-3818. Permission to enter and use Koniag Lands depends on following these and any other applicable use restrictions. Koniag may revoke permission at any time if these rules are not followed. Violations may result in revocation of the permit, denial of future permits, removal, trespass, or legal action. A Land Access Permit may be revoked or cancelled by Koniag at any time with or without cause, at Koniag’s sole discretion. Koniag appreciates your interest in and respect for our ancestral lands. By following these terms and conditions, we can help protect and care for Koniag Lands for future generations. Quyanaa!
